Monument to the defenders of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War
In 1995, the administration of Nizhny Novgorod announced a competition for the project of a monument - a symbol of Victory. As a result, the image of George the Victorious was chosen; Its authors are the famous Nizhny Novgorod sculptor, Honored Artist of Russia TG. Kholueva and the architect V.D. Vasiliev. The installation of the monument was allocated only 3.5 months. On the eve of the anniversary day of the Great Victory, on May 9, 1995, in the heart of the city - the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin - a monument to the defenders of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War was consecrated and solemnly unveiled on the territory of the memorial "Gorkovane-front".
A quadrangular pedestal made of gray granite is crowned by a bronze sculpture depicting the Christian saint and the great martyr George, nicknamed by the people as the Victorious. George pierces his sharp spear exhausted from the struggle of the serpent. The sculptor managed to create an image of a hero who, after an eight-day grievous torment in 304, was beheaded, but did not give up his faith. On the polished surface of the pedestal the inscription is inscribed: "Defenders of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945)".
The monument was placed in the center of the exhibition of weapons, which in the years of the hard and bloody Great Patriotic War forged in the shops of Nizhny Novgorod. This is an eternal reminder to the descendants of the immortal feat of fellow countrymen for the sake of victory.
