Cathedral Square, Cathedral of the Ressurection, and the Museum of Russian Patriarchate in Arzamas
«There are a few provincial cities in Russia, which being so happily located as Arzamas, would be happy the same» (P. Melnikov-Pechersky). The majestic Cathedral of the Resurrection of the XIX century painted by pupils of Stupin art school, a unique building of the magistrate, wooden noble mansion houses with columns, and merchant's rows will touch anyone's feelings. The new museum of Patriarchate tells about the value Nizhny Novgorod region for the Russian Orthodox Church (Patriarch Nikon was born in Nizhny Novgorod village of Vel'demanovo; patriarch Sergey Starogorodskiy was born in Arzamas; the origins of the current Patriarch Kirill are also Nizhny Novgorod)
In addition to undoubted artistic value, the Cathedral of Resurrection has historical significance as far as a carved iconostasis as majestic as the cathedral itself has been preserved. The height of the iconostasis is 13.5 meters. There are large wooden pillars garnished with pilasters and delicate carving. The Royal Gates are decorated with the icons of Christ and the Mother of God as tall as a man which were made by the professor of pictorial art Alekseev (A.V. Stupin's son-in-law).
The temple has several altars. The main one is consecrated in the name of the Resurrection of Christ; the right aisle — in the name of Alexander Nevsky and Mitrofan of Voronezh; the left one — in the name of St. John the Soldier. There are two side chapels in the temple; they are located in semi-circular niches of porticoes and have single stage iconostasis: the right one is in the name of Pokrov of Our Lady; the left one is in the name of All Saints.
On the right side of the Cross there is the most ancient relic, the icon of the Resurrection of Christ (The Descent into Hell) of the XVI century. It is inserted into the large icon so that all the sufferings of Christ are depicted around it. There is a legend that says that this iconhas been left as a gift to Arzamas by Tsar Ivan the Terrible when founded the city. There are other revered icons: the Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God in a silver gold plated chasuble; the icon «Joy of All Who Sorrow» made with beads; the image of the suffering Savior in the crown of thorns of Italian painting (this icon was purchased abroad and then brought as a gift to the cathedral by Arzmas landlords); the icon of Holy Mother of God «Assuage my sorrows» (the second half of the XVII century); the icon «The Sign of the Holy Mother of God»; the icon of St. Alexander Nevsky painted by artists of Stupin at the beginning of the XIX century (it was sent as a gift to Arzamas Alexander Nevsky society by future Patriarch Sergius (Starogorodskiy).
In the Cathedral of the Resurrection one can see a rare for Orthodox churches sculpture made from wood, that is, Crucifixion with nearby Holy Mother of God and John the Baptist.
